Associate Director, Makuu

Job Description


  • Manages Makuu’s communication strategy and analytics (newsletter, social media, website).
  • Supports signature and supplemental program targeting Penn’s Black community through planning, collaboration, promotion, execution, documentation / archiving, and assessment.
  • Co-advises the UMOJA umbrella organization.
  • Advises and supports graduate and undergraduate organizations.
  • Supports student success and wellness, making outside referrals when necessary.
  • Serves as a liaison to community-based organizations and collaborative efforts.
  • Fosters ties with alumni through Penn Spectrum / Alumni Relations.


BA/BS required, preferably in Africana / Black Studies, Communications, Cultural / Ethnic Studies, Sociology, Education, Gender Studies, Psychology or related fields plus 1-2 years related experience or equivalent combination of experience and education. Experience working in / with Black cultural spaces, preferably in higher educational settings. Demonstrated understanding and application of intersectional practices. Experience advising students and student groups as well as creating, implementing, and evaluating programming. Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with student, faculty, administrative, and community partners. Strong oral, written, editing, and technological skills, with a particular focus on social media and website management. Graphic / design experience is a plus.

Position will require some evening work, with occasional weekend programs / duties.
